#1: (Fellow Weinprobers: Please forgive the English, as meine Deutsch ist sehr rostig!) To celebrate a very special occasion, we just opened our only bottle (fortunately, 0.75l !!) of Ewald Theod. Drathen 1980er Senheimer Beinengarten Riesling QmP Eiswein from Weingut Simon-Mees (Amliche Prüfungs-Nr. 1 637 108 008 81), which I had purchased roughly 20 years ago in Germany. We'd only taken reasonable care of the bottle, storing it on its side in our terra cotta draintile wine rack, and -- I confess -- not properly racking it each year. With some trepidation and not a little difficulty, I removed the top layer of foil... The cork was soaked through, with a small amount of wetness actually visible at one point along its circumference under the foil. So, I was fully prepared for the wine to be far past its prime, even spoilt, in fact. Imagine our stunned surprise to find the wine, instead, to be absolutely spectacular! Deep, rich chestnut brown in color (think: Napoleon cognac), with a distinct nose of raisins, almonds, oak, caramel and vanilla, the wine flowed over the palate not with the sweet apricot flavor of a BA or TBA (which one might well expect given its late harvest and eiswein appellation), but rather gentle cheek-puckering acidity and remarkably fresh undertones of Riesling grape flavor, as though the grapes had been picked in 2005! As the wine opened more in the glass, the acidity softened, replaced with warm, smooth vanilla and caramel notes. My son and I even shared a small snifter of VSOP Armagnac to compare, confirming our sense of the separate characters of fresh-picked Riesling grapes and the benefit of oak and years of maturity. I found on the Senheimer community website that Simon-Mees has a 400-year tradition; so, I guess that explains why this wine was so wonderful! A truly amazing wine of marvelously layered complexity, clearly belonging to the ranks of "best bottles in my lifetime." We have no idea of the current value of such a bottle, only that it was priceless to us...
